Katie Vyktoriah’s “Pink Headband At Wal-Mart” Story Being Questioned By Internets

The internet continues to burn with the story of the mommy blogger who alleges her son was accosted in a Davenport, FL area Wal-Mart. The story has spread to MSN, the Daily Mail, even Gawker after being posted by the mother herself on reddit and Huffington Post.

But almost from the start people expressed doubts about the veracity of the story. Internet searches revealed background claims by the mother that only confirmed for many that her previous statement that she used to be a “pathological liar” might apply to this tale as well.

Now removed from her site claims included having survived 3 failed kidnapping attempts and 1 successful one; claiming to be a stewardess for an airline and quitting just weeks before the flight crashed twice in three months; that she was “meant to be in NYC on 9/11, but I cancelled last minute”; that she missed catching a train that later crashed. When called on the truthiness of these claims, Katie responded:

And yes, much of that list was tongue in cheek to drag out some of my sillier stories into much bigger dramas than they were. When I wrote it more than a year ago, I drew people’s attention to it as a FUNNY (though accurate) representation of some of the stuff I’ve been through in my life.

Other claims include suffering from Celiac disease, diabetes, lactose intolerance, BPD, manic depression, ADHD, and apparently her breasts are so spectacular they cause bar fights.

Soon after the internet began questioning why, if it’s a big enough deal to craft what she no doubt hoped would be a viral blog post, she didn’t contact the store or the police Katie began claiming she was being harassed. Saying her milk supply was drying up and that she was receiving “threats of pizza deliveries to my house”, she closed down her site. 30 minutes later Katie claimed to be on the phone with the sheriff’s department “waiting for them to show  up”. Despite a fatal car crash that closed down roads for two hours, according to her a deputy arrived, took a report, and left within an hour of her call.

Debate continues online with some people saying it doesn’t matter if the story is true because it started a discussion about gender issues, and others pointing out that if the story is untrue, using such issues for page views and attention is probably doing a disservice to the LGBT community.

I was unable to reach the Polk County Sheriff’s Department for confirmation or statement and Wal-Mart has yet to publicly respond to Katie’s claim. We await further developments and welcome any tips or information. We will update this post as information becomes available.

UPDATE: Apparently Katie has now been placed under psych observation. From the Orlando Sentinel:

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office report, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office became aware of Carpenter’s blog post detailing the alleged incident at a Four Corners-area Walmart.

Since Polk County was eventually mentioned specifically in the blog as being the responding agency, a Sheriff’s Office lieutenant requested a deputy go meet with Carpenter.

When the Polk deputy met with Carpenter — it’s not clear when that happened — she began making suicidal statements, the Lake County report said.

A deputy added that “possible video of the incident may be obtained and viewed to in fact verify that the incident actually did occur or if it was all made up.”

UPDATE: HuffPo has removed her post saying “We have also confirmed with investigators that they are in contact with the author.”

UPDATE: She has now been released and told The Ledger that “she doesn’t care whether deputies find proof in the Wal-Mart surveillance footage.” She added “I don’t think it will do any good…I just want it to go away.”"

UPDATE: The “A Mother Thing” Facebook page has disappeared.

My brother used to steal my hair accessories and play dress up with me all the time when we were little kids. My friends and I used to just ohh and aww and tell him how pretty he was when he wore a dress.

He also used to steal my Barbies so he could undress them and feel their plastic boobs.

Point being, it’s pretty fucked up to try to turn your 2-year-old into a gay icon for doing completely normal, not sexual orientation related, kid stuff. Of course not a single one of the mommy bloggers has the foresight to think about how pissed their 15-year-old son will inevitably be to read this.

    • avatar Scandahooligan

Right? I have friends whose little pre-school-aged boys like to play dress-up and princess and wear pretty, sparkly things. My friends let them. Their opinion is that not all boys like to play with sporting things or cars and trucks…so what’s left? Also, one mom sees her daughter getting a TON of positive attention when she dresses up and looks pretty and her son sees it too and wants in on that. Boys clothes are boring in comparison. It’s just kids doing what kids do, not a statement of sexual orientation.

    • avatar Maeby Fünke

Maybe my married-with-four-kids brother is secretly gay because we have photos of him at age 3 wearing a frilly dress and patent Mary Janes. Oh, and JUST the fur-trimmed hood from my red coat.

    • avatar Falkor

Gay icon? Oh please. Nowhere in the post does she suggest her son might be gay. Fake or not that wasn’t the point of the story.

      • avatar Mary W.

Well the author stated that the point of the blog post was to “draw attention to the issue of gay marriage” so according to her it was. I believe that was in the Reddit thread she and her husband participated in.

  2. avatar Hamcat-by-proxy

I am waiting for the official Walmart stmt to come out debunking this dramatica. I heard 4chan has a hold of this. Can’t wait til that shit hits the fan. Mommy bloggers are on my nerves lately. Ever since the Blogher swag-grab-recognize-and-worship-my-shittiness, I mean conference, I see what self centered tards these women can be.

  3. avatar Respect privacy and lies OH MY

I was away from the computer and got notice of this story and it couldn’t end fast enough.

When the things she’s claimed wrong with her and have happened to her are all put together like you did PP, people who supported her are going to run like the “April Rose” and “Warrior Eli” hoaxes supporters did.

I agree it takes away from the real issues, I just wonder how long it will be before she starts a cancer blog for one of her kids or herself. Personally, I think anyone who hoaxes cancer, esp childhood cancer, should be injected with 5 million different kinds of cancer and be left staked out in the desert to die, but that punishment might be a little harsh for some of them (especially if they are a teenager).

You did however, forget one of my favorite things, where she says she cleans her kids boogers while they are sleeping with her freaking tongue. (and maybe their ears too).

    • avatar IAMNotImpressed

      How is that even possible?!
How does an adult-size tongue fit up a tiny kid nostril?
Or in an ear hole, for that matter?
If they were, like, dripping out of either orifice, why wouldn’t she just wipe them with a tissue? And if not, how the hell is she getting her big old tongue in there?

I also live in her area (actually east tampa) but we share a local news outlet called Bay news 9 that does county by county coverage of local stories 24 hours a day and do far, crickets. Will let you know if I hear anything.

    • avatar Erika

So*, not do… derp. Bay news 9 also has a website, might be a good source for info.

Great investigative reporting, PartyPants ~ what I especially like about this story is how it underscores the complete unreliability of the bs fodder mill known as HuffPo. Now MSN too? You don’t even have journalistic training & resources, as you humbly acknowledge, but you left them in the dust. Kudos.

    • avatar AsianPersuasion

Huffpo has absolutely NO journalistic integrity.

    • avatar Respect privacy and lies OH MY

      Their last update:

Update: The Polk County Sheriff’s Office public information officer says that she has only been contacted by one other media outlet, a Tampa TV station, in addition to the City Paper. The Huffington Post has contacted the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, both the records department and now the public information officer.

If she ever comes back to the internet, she will have to keep her mug off of the site and as much as she wants to be famous, I doubt she will be back.
What I hate is she named him in her post, so when he gets older and he googles himself (or his friends google him) he will find out what a low life scum his mother is and what she did to him when he was two.

      • avatar Kathy Santoni

That probably won’t be the first time he realizes what a piece of work his mum is.

    • avatar Lactating Rage

I doubt she will get a book deal, but I bet she will create a new online persona (after some heat dies down). It seems like she and her mental illness cannot live without the lying and drama the internet can bring.

  7. avatar Walt fucking Whitman

I believe everything and even I knew this story was bullshit. Not a grain of truth to it.

I came here for the first time today for the debunking…

  9. avatar Doctorwrite

Over on Huffpo they have deleted all posts questioning the truthfulness of the author’s article. They started cleaning house Sunday evening and within hours had rid the post of nearly all comments except for the ones expressing outrage over what allegedly happened to this woman’s child. Now comments stating the story is a likely fabrication aren’t being posted at all. Except for Facebook, and she’s not accepting anymore friends, Katie’s blog and all else are temporarily down. Censorship is alive and well over at Huffpo. Instead of trying to get at the truth, they seem hellbent on people rallying around this ‘emperor has no clothes’ sensational tale this woman is selling.

    • avatar IAMNotImpressed

They are also letting the gay-bashers post, and leaving those comments up, as if to demonstrate that yes, these types do exist and this story must therefore be true.
      Shady, shady HuffPo.

      • avatar Doctorwrite

I used to think Huffpo was Progressive. Not anymore. Not after they scrubbed all those comments.

        • avatar Seamonkey

God, I knew their reporting was shit, but they’re messing with the comments now? What dicks!

What kills me is that my conservative FOX-watching parents constantly bring up the unreliability of HuffPo, like IF HUFFPO IS WRONG THAT JUST PROVES LIBERALS ARE WRONG. No, guys, it just proves that idiocy and assholery exist in both camps.

          • avatar TurkeyVulture

I know it’s schadenfreude, but I am getting so much joy out of seeing people wake up and realize what a crock of shit HuffPo is. It’s tormented me for a long time, that people take them seriously as a reputable news source.

            • It’s always been roughly on par with Babble for me.

“Thank you for telling me what I already know. You should work for the Huffington Post.”

          • avatar zvezda

Oh, I’ve had comments approved and then removed later before. Not even politically related ones, either.

      • avatar Greg'sWife (literally) aka DirtyLakeMichigan

Actually, I’m really glad I was able to witness AND have a civilized, normal, asking-for-reason-in-this, response obliterated. There’s so much tsk-tsking about liberal / right media and I was always, ‘meh’. Now I finally have a real-life example of journalistic NON-integrity in HuffPo. Eye opening.
Huffington Post is apparently on the same level as Star and The Enquirer.

        • avatar boozeaddled barbarian

Except the Enquirer is actually one of the best for investigating because of the numerous lawsuits they lost in the 80s. Huffpo and Foxnews, not so much.

      • avatar Kitty Likes to Scratch

Oh no, HuffPo, you’re not pushing any agenda at all. None whatsoever.

        • avatar Kitty Likes to Scratch

          • avatar IAMNotImpressed

Does HuffPo have any rival sites? Any competitors who’d relish a chance to embarrass those censoring pricks? I really want to see HuffPo exposed for assisting Katie Vyktoriah with this scammy hoax.

            • avatar Anon

If Fox News has a website, that’d be it.

They’d do the exact same thing when it suited their own agenda and would be completely oblivious to the irony, but yeah, the only rivals they have are the people who are just like them but on the other side of the political spectrum.

  10. avatar Ombré disaster

Her story not only screams bullshit on a million levels, but rereading it made me more pissed off: as the mother of a two year old boy, if an adult confronted us like that AND touched him, I not only would have made a huge scene, but the store and the cops would have been called in seconds. AND she had a 5 month old with her — puuuulease. She should get booked for whoring her sons picture out all over the Internet.

  11. avatar Topsecretusername

I saw a lot of comments on the previous post hoping that WalMart releases the footage, and I’m not sure why they’d do that. Did Katie allege that employees saw it and did nothing? If not, I’m not sure what they’d stand to gain by releasing the tapes — proving that assholes don’t shop at their stores? (Sorry if this doesn’t make sense — am post-Ambien.)

    • avatar MrsDoomAndGloom

You’re amazing! After I take Ambien, I start waving to the pretty, pretty fireflies in the wall :D :D :D like such, then pass out.
