I'll just get down to business.

Things I dislike about YHL

1.Monday giveaways that are ALWAYS for US Residents only (although they try to WRANGLE as many international giveaways as possible) I dont really care for giveaways at all, but I feel like if this blog is your business and giveaways are a thank you.. shouldnt you thank ALL your readers? dont you expect us ALL to buy your book?…

2. Enough with the book. Seriously, congrats its a pretty big deal. but why should i buy the cow when i get the milk for free?

3. reader redesigns… i dont care about someone elses designs. i come to YOUR blog to see YOUR stuff.

4. "post schedules" i hate that each day i know more or less what i wil get… thursdays 2nd post is a reader redesign, mondays 2nd post is a giveaway, wednesday & friday is one post etc

5. superlatives… wtf? if i come to your blog daily dont give me some b.s roundup of everything you already did that month cuz i already know..

6. "we're not perfect.. i swear.. here i'll show you.. ill make a "messy house tour" video and leave my bra out and a cup by the sink.. see! we're sooo messy!!! we're normal!!!!"

Care to add?

Rebuttal:

1) Giveaways are sponsored by the companies, it's not like they are going out and buying things to give away themselves. The companies make those rules based on shipping, customs, and tax expenses. To pick on YHL for that is absurd.

2) Then don't buy it. If they were shilling it all the time (think Messi when her book came out), then I could see being annoyed, but they had one post when it became available for preorder, and they occasionally mention that the second bedroom and sunporch are full of book projects. Knowing their commenters, they say that only to prevent a barrage of "why haven't you shown pictures of the second bedroom lately???" questions.

3) I appreciate that they give new material that is interesting, rather than skip a day or post pure fluff. And the reader redesigns are actually some of my favorite things they post–I find them so inspirational, especially since I don't love the design of their current house.

4) Great, that means you can skip Mondays and Thursdays and quit your bitching.

5) Not everyone reads their blog daily, and I think it's cute, especially if you view their blog as a sort of yearbook/chronicle of their lives.

6) Maybe you should find a different blog to read.

Oh man, I just white knighted. Do I have to turn in my GOMI membership card?

It's funny that YHL is both SOMI and GOMI here. I'm more in the SOMI camp myself. Sure they are overly wordy and have made some design mistakes, but those two are just so earnest and cute, it's hard for me to snark on them. You should check out the GBCN Home and Garden Board, where their every move is criticized and dissected. Ouch!

Whoops- sorry. Didnt mean to offend anyone. I think I am on YHL overload. They are so wordy sometimes they make my brain hurt, that is all. You can tell they are genuine people, and certainly deserve the recognition they have- Im just hatin at the moment, is all.

Although I stand by my annoyance of the mostly US giveaways! :)

I'm team blogger hogger on this one. I've posted on the somi thread before(I think that they're gomi), but I have thought that they needed a gomi one too. I can't believe that all of these snarky blog readers on this site can't see how awful their blog has gotten!

6. They're not good at decorating. Have you seen their choices lately? Unless it's a way to make more posts, which I think it is, why else would they need to redo every choice?

7. they're full of themselves. Actions speak louder than words- they never ask for opinions from their readers, they are insanely defensive over their choices ("we're so in love with it/ it's not everyone's jam"), they submit their designs to countless blogs and news sources for extra attention, etc. It wasn't that long ago that they were charging money for "mood boards" and "art" and if that doesn't show that they think that they're experts, I don't know what does. This "we're just young DIYers learning as we go" act is put on to get more readers.

8. Saying "haha."

Snarky librarian, did you just tell someone on GOMI to find another blog to read?!

I was thinking earlier about how clean their house is, and then realized- they have a WHOLE ROOM that they just dump crap in.  Taking that into account, I do not feel so bad about my own regularly messy home.

I always seem to forget that too. Their house is a lot bigger than mine with that sunroom/basement/more bedroom thing they got going on. I would love a room to dump all that junk that stares at me judgementally while I avoid eye contact with it pretending it's not there. That said, I do like them. They are likable enough to make me gloss over the fact that they are so damn cheesey.

I have to say though, I loved their first house. This house? Meh. I have chosen not to nitpick over stuff that is in their house, but I truly hate: those creepy yellow knobs on the bookshelf area in the dining room, that ridiculous paint chip art (it is NOT art), I liked the original mirror in the kitchen, the range hood-sweet god I hate that range hood, it looks cheap, tacky, and every post about had me wishing I could take a hammer to it, and finally in the quiz of life Sherry, spray paint is not always the answer! Whew, I feel better.

But they are still SOMI for me. I dunno why. I just like 'em.

Wow- Good call, that is so true!

The house is also so oversized, it seems like so much wasted space!-The dining room for one, such an amazing space with the bookcase and giant window… and how often do they really use it? and they dont even use the entrance!.. and second, all the little "set ups" they have…. the chair/ottomon in the kitchen, the desk and chair in the living room, the ottomons in the gallery hallway.. Do they really use all these? Its just wasted space/reminds me of an open house having little "set ups" Does that make sense? I mean it is their house and who knows what they use, certainly I dont…

I think I was a little over defensive last night, but they just arenowhere near gomi territory for me. I don't read many non-fashion blogs (mainly just hate reads introduced to me by gomi), but they are nowhere near the vileness of some bloggers. I was just thinking yesterday after they posted the train video about how different they are from TW, even though their kids are less than a month apart. People likJenna need to gomi, not an adorable family who love their daughter and spray paint. Let's just blame my uterus for this one.

Side note: I firmly believe having a junk room is key to a clean house. My mother is one of those women with a house that you could eat off the floor, and everything is precisely in its place. She has always had a room that they are "renovating" atwhere she puts all of the crap that doesn't have a home, and then closes the door bc it's a work in progress. Right now it's one of the bedrooms, but it changes every few years (she is actually redoing the rooms, not just using it as q cover, but she does it all very slowly).

YES!!!

It's one thing if it's a piece-a-crap bookcase you just happen to find in front of someone's house on garbage day — then by all means paint it!  But they take perfectly good pieces of furniture and cover up beautiful wood with unholy shades of yellow and aqua….not for me.

In general, I really like their blog, I think Clara is adorable, and I think they are a couple that I would actually want to know in real life.  But….they are so OCD about their house I just can't take it sometimes.  They obsess about the most ridiculous things, and it seems to me that they are the type of folks who will *never* be satisfied with their home.  I just want them to stop and enjoy what they have instead of constantly looking for the next project.  Part of the problem is that they spend 24/7 there, just staring at the same walls and thinking "I just don't know about those stools…"  If they had full-time jobs that got them OUT of the house, they would slap some paint up and be done with it like the rest of us.

I agree. I loved their blog back when John had a job, but not now that it's the single source of income for their family. I think that they have to do all of the OCD projects because they need content. I wish that they were back to being normal people who made choices about their house based on what they actually needed/ wanted for their lifestyle.

I just thought of another thing that annoys me: they stretch out their projects too much. Why does it take two people without real jobs so much time to build a simple deck or paint kitchen cabinets?
