Gimlet, is that Masters of Library and Information science?

Yes. Don't get one. There's a librarian topic in the Career Cats section of Members Only if we want to talk more.

I have been skeptical of Ruth for awhile now; the drama with her pregnant sister was the last straw.  Her life has just been one giant string of drama for years now, and it read as unbelievable to me.  Of course, sometimes the truth IS unbelievable, so I wasn't certain, but now that the posts from TWoP have surfaced, I think it's clear that she's lying.  Maybe it's partial truth with embellishments or maybe it's 100% fiction, I have no idea, but the baby comment really can't be easily explained away.

I also don't believe for one minute that someone stormed into her workplace and demanded to see her ID.  I just don't.  I think that was a neat, tidy way for her to decline all non-Paypal assistance from people in the Chicago area.  It also pulled the focus off the holes in her story and made people who follow her doubt one another and wonder who would be so bold and rude as to burst in on her at work and demand to see a drivers license.  Any time I read a sob story or someone's difficult trials and find that it's followed by them rattling a virtual tin can, my internet bullshit alarms go off.  Maybe I'm just a big meanie pants and she's going to have a perfect explanation for all of this, but I seriously doubt it.

The post has continued on FJ and is still in the chatter section.  It's mostly been people voicing their doubts.  Someone brought up a brother who allegedly had stage 4 melanoma (a very deadly cancer) and noted that it has never been mentioned again.  Someone else made a long post about the various sketchy elements to her story:

  • How unlikely it is that she was able to get a job in a library in Chicago with just a BS which may or may not have been in library science – her degree is unclear at the moment.
  • The TWoP link where she claims to have had a baby
  • No one has any inkling of her identity and since the ATI community is pretty small, someone should've guessed by now
  • The pregnant sister getting pregnant at an ATI conference
  • Her many, many problems and how she's gotten money because of them
  • A "script" that she and other hoax blogs (such as Warrior Eli) tend to follow – a past that forces her to hide her identity, terrible trials that are followed by people questioning her, and then another terrible trial to cause people to stop questioning
  • Some of her facts haven't lined up, such as when she was born, where she went to college and what degree she got, etc

Some of her fangirls are nuts, but not like that.

I read a comment from one of her followers in some random thread who said that Ruth will stop blogging if people doubt her. Like, shouldn't that inclination tip you off? That they might quit because people want basic info verified in order to send $$$?

Another newbie here, fascinated by "Ruth". :)

  • How unlikely it is that she was able to get a job in a library in Chicago with just a BS which may or may not have been in library science – her degree is unclear at the moment.

Only a small contribution to make but on her degree, on Nov 13, 2010, she said http://razingruth.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/e-mail-questions.html  "Michael asked – What is your major? Well, I'm shooting for library sciences. I'll have to go to a different school to finish out the master's portion."

On Monday, September 24, 2012, when announcing the end of her blog, she elaborates:

http://razingruth.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/is-this-end.html#comment-form "No, I'm not in library services. It turns out that my degree is pretty useless without a masters and budget issues within the state mean that libraries are downsizing, not hiring."

(Interestingly, an Unknown Commenter throws her a lifeline here: "I don't think it needs to be the end of the blog completely. Why can't it just be the end of the ATIA part? Couldn't you tell about the good, the bad, the funny of your jobs (not so much that you reveal details that reveal who you are)? Maybe someday you'll upgrade to an apartment, and we'll want to hear about that. Maybe someday you will get a library job after all, or at least something in a bookstore, something book related online, who knows? Maybe you'll get involved in church (NOT an ATIA type one) that you enjoy and we'll want to hear about it..maybe you'll meet another guy….you get the gist. I check your blog every day for new posts, and I would hate for it to end.")

Edited to add:  On FJ on Feb 26, 2012 ""Razingruth" responded on a thread to say: http://freejinger.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8104

"A Cliff Notes summary of me?
I was the first girl in a family of eleven kids (though, one was born after I left home). My father was involved in Bill Gothard's original youth conflicts ministry, which evolved into what is now known as ATI or IBLP. I was homeschooled by my mother using the ATI curriculum. We were, I guess you could say, a pilot/test family. As has been mentioned, I was "courted" by a young man I didn't love, or particularly care for, and I left my family. I journaled most of this in a serial style chronical for NLQ. I am now in university studying Library Science and Literature. Recently, my sister got pregnant and left my father's home. I'll try to answer any questions you have but please know that I remain anonymous for my own reasons and I may not answer every question you ask. "

Bizarrely, FreeJinger Admin has decided to keep the Razing Ruth thread over there locked down in "Chatter" for members with over 75 posts.  Something to do with a need to "dial back the obsession" and not get too involved in drama just because of the hot weather….. rolleyes So I am glad to have found an open discussion here.

LOL, I was the unknown commenter…I didn't even realize I was "throwing her a lifeline."

It is interesting that the ONLY restaurant customer story she ever shared was the mean pro lifers one…I've never been a waitress (though I would have liked to be), but I did work fast food for two years, and yes, once in  a blue moon you get a crazy person or group of people, but there are also so many good positive things…the regulars that you somewhat get to know, your heart getting warmed when a down and out homeless person asks how YOUR Christmas was, the "kids say the cutest things" moments, etc. etc.  She shared no positive, happy stories after I asked her to keep the blog. Not to mention, I am pro life (though due to my schedule am not an activist), and most pro life people I know have realized the screaming/threatening/picketing/operation rescue type tactics were an utter fail, and unloving, so  the shift has been to talking with, praying for, counseling, helping with resources, etc…that picketing stuff is so 1980s.

I know someone on her blog is questioning why we're bothering questioning her. Well, I'M bothering b/c a. I sent her $ once (thankfully only once). b. I prayed for her. I don't like the idea of having spent both $ and prayers on a fictional being (although I believe my God is a big God and he can handle the misspent prayers)..I used to be one of her biggest defenders (partly because I had nannied for a Gothard family, and while they were really quite reasonable compared to Ruth's story, a lot of the beliefs and literature had the POTENTIAL to go to the extremes of her family).  Frankly I am going to ask that family if they have any idea who she is (I'm still in touch with them).

Furthermore, she could have easily proven herself somewhat by posting pictures of the scenery on her trip…she already told about the trip, so that would reveal no one's identity. This is my lesson not to be so gullible…Every time someone on twop said they were a Duggar insider on twop I believed them, and they were always disproved (although I believe Anna's brotehr in law was genuine, but that's it). It's time for me to grow up and get more skeptical, I guess. embarrassedfrown                                                                                                                              p.s. I think I was the one who said, "If we keep questioning her, she won't keep up with her blog." At the time, I believed her 100% and felt care and compassion for her, so that's why I said that. If that was annoying, do pardon me.                                                                                                                       p.s.2. The very begninning of her story seems reasonable (growing up ATIA and the forced courtship). Part of me wonders if she really did get married off to "Aron" and the escape and all that followed is her alternate (dream) reality.                                                                                                                   *I suppose there is also always the possibility that "Aron"  raped her, and she got pregnant and either adopted out/aborted the baby. But it doesn't make sense to be public about it on twop and then so private on her blog.

Oh don't worry about it. Honestly, now knowing who it might have been who made that comment, I can't help but to wonder if maybe even then you sensed something was off with her story. I can't speak for you, but it seems like a lot of her fans are so desperate to keep her blogging as a way to not face the fact that she might be a scammer.

Regarding what you said about the pro-lifers, it's a good example of how Ruth has made everything appear to be that the world is against her. She has turned that attitude into a not-so-subtle quest for cash. All of her recent posts are either why she can't out herself or why she needs money. And all of her troubles are ones that would be fixed by money. It isn't just that her boss questions her professionalism and her coworkers are catty- it's her boss questioning her way of dress and her coworkers making fun of her sparse lunch. So she must need money for clothes and food, right? (Never mind that Ruth seems to think she is some small-town girl living in Paris or something like that. Chicago is a hotbed of poverty, so this idea that she's being singled out for being disadvantaged is unrealistic. She's also made it clear that she doesn't work at the University of Chicago, so I can't imagine librarians from DePaul, Roosevelt, or UIC being particularly high and mighty about their positions in life. Or even people from UofC for that matter, as it's in the South Side and they see more of said poverty than anyone. But that's just speculation on my part).

I feel bad for her followers, because they seem like a bunch of compassionate people who are really being taken for a ride with this story.

I would also encourage any of her 'fans' finding this to check out the Progressive Parent thread in the Mommy/Daddy Bloggers. While that wasn't a scam, per say, it is an example of a little-known blogger getting $13,000 in online donations after her infant son died. I've seen some of Ruth's fans wondering if she's really getting that much money from people, but there are lesser known bloggers out there who have made quite a bit of money from their tragedies. I'm thinking this Ruth person is making a nice chunk of change from people who believe she is the most oppressed person ever.

There was a poster called Creaky Steel at FJ who said she was involved in helping Ruth bring her sister out of the family when she was pregnant.  It would be interesting to hear her thoughts on the current state of affairs: http://www.freejinger.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7786&p=204291&hilit=+ruth#p204291

I just read that and it's still very cagey. How hard is it to have a third party verify her story in a concise way without her identity being compromised? All this person says is, "I know this for real, but that's all I'm going to say."

Okayyy? I think that some people have frequent contact with Ruth via email and therefore think they are privy to verification of her identity. As if emailing with someone a lot means you know for 100% fact they are real. (Catfishing, anyone?). Has anyone actually met her? If someone had actually met her, why wouldn't they say so?

Interesting that people are finally starting to question this.

I've long suspected RR was a fake but if you made any comments on her threads in FJ posters would jump to her defence and I decided it wasn't worth the drama.

I remember there was some drama with the No Longer Quivering blog and Razing Ruth, something about collecting donations? I forget the details. I've done some google sleuthing and there are various threads on other forums since 2010 from people suspecting it's a fake as well.

I was one that used to jump to her defense frown. I do beg pardon, snark snark.. Only on the yuku board, though, not the new one (I've only ever lurked on the new board). I also thought I had "proof" b/c of one detail about her family shared privately through e-mail, and a sister's real name being shared. I now realize the detail could have been picked up anywhere on line, and real names and nicknames are in name books everywhere.

I've also now read extensively through the possum mamma site..holy similarities batman (car accident/injuries/Duggar thoughts/location all similar )..Possum mamma writes as a mother of 4 ateheist with a catholic background so that part is totally different…but…I live in central CA (I figured out that's where she (or the faker) was just b/c I could recognize stuff, and I suggested someday meeting (in a PUBLIC place)…nothing…
