Like some people have said, I think they can afford this house. Anyone who has bought a house understands that you are a little broke after it. They have 6000 sq. ft. and 5 acres for that mortgage and both of them have incomes that allow for them to afford other nice things but they seem to pass on other splurges so I think they have some idea of how to manage their shit. She has a giant home with a lot of updates needed and furniture to buy and she doesn't have a lot of liquid assets at the moment so she probably is a little house poor.

I don't think she's in danger of foreclosure or anything like that but she's trying to explain to readers why she hasn't redone everything yet. People got on YHL's case for not updating the kitchen right away and I think Katie was just responding to that discussion. I hate McMansions in general but I can see why she didn't want to pass up the home and land.

Oh Rowena I know! It's great that she wants to get things on the wall but it drives me bananas that she leaves the Goodwill pics in the frames until she finds something to put in them. The baskets/frames/shelf set up didn't work at all… but what she had up before was not any better. Did you see the watercolor pencil jellyfish? Map wins over either of these any day.

Oh, those were Goodwill pictures?  No wonder they looked so chintzy.  I've bought frames there before, but only when I already had something to put in them; my god there's some ugly "art" in thrift stores.  And yep, I saw that jellyfish.  I guess it'd be okay in, I don't know, a kid's room or a casual beach house or something, but as a focal point in that traditionally decorated living room?  I actually do like the white furniture and striped rug in that living room, so why the hell she keeps putting such shabby crap on the big wall is beyond me.

Re: Her mortgage, @2k for 6000 sq ft plus acreage sounds like a fantastic deal to me!  I live outside Nashville, and if she's pretty far from Atlanta I'm sure the housing costs are similar.  We pay $1100 a month for 1500 sq ft and a half acre (although we pay that much because we did this refinancing thing that'll pay our house off in about 11 years.  Only have about 6 more to go!)  My aunt was paying around $2000/month for her gorgeous ~3000 sq ft house and postage-stamp lawn; granted, it was a lot closer to the city, but holy hell I think got the Bowers got a great deal on that behemoth of a house.

I looked at her "house tour" pictures for the first time when I was checking out the map, and seriously, that house is freaking enormous.  I'm not knocking that; I just personally can't imagine living in something so huge.  I mean, the size of the living room and the basement alone! Yeah, a lot of people can afford big houses down here, but the only people with houses that big are usually pretty damn wealthy; I'd say the average new home is probably around 2000-3000 sq ft.  Maybe I'm just skewed because I've been living in a fairly small one for a while, but I think anything over 3000 is waaay more than I'd ever be able to handle.  (I can't stand having rooms that I don't use often for some reason; my nice little guest room drives me nuts because we only have one or two overnight guests a year.)

Am I the only one who kind of liked her jelly fish water color? I don't think it fits in her home, but I can see it working in a different setting.

^ No.  I said it'd be okay in a kid's room or a casual beach house or something, but as a focal point in that traditionally decorated living room it looked silly.

Not a Mormon. Christian of the southern, Bible-thumping variety, I believe.

What people don't think about when they buy huge houses are the hidden costs. The utilities are always WAY higher, for example, and insurance tends to go up steadily every year (increasing the mortgage payment). Maintenance is another big thing, whether you're talking about the house itself or the five acres it's sitting on. You can't just let your acreage overgrow; you either have to take care of it yourself, or you have to pay someone to do it. All are huge time, energy, and money vacuums. Never mind the cost of "filling up" the house, particularly if you're buying random things just to have stuff on the walls.

So yeah, it's never a decision I would make in a single-income family that doesn't have a large financial cushion (even on $100K/year), especially if the wage-earner has to commute several hours, and ESPECIALLY if I still owned my previous home.

Hopefully that clears up the "but it's only $2K a month for a ginormous house!" confusion.

No, I really like it!  I agree that it doesn't fit into her decor at all, though.  My home is pretty casual and I'd like to go beachy with my half bathroom.  I'd definitely consider doing something similar to her jellyfish (maybe an octopus?).  Anyway, rambling…

I like Katie Bower in an "I would be her friend" kind of way but I do not like her blog.  She seems genuinely sweet but I can't handle the super long posts with TONS of photos.

Hi Katie! Please frame that map in your living room! It would look SO MUCH BETTER.

That post made me like and respect her a little bit, despite the "I just want to spread looooooove" rambling. I upgrade her from "loathe" to "meh."

I mean, I still really don't like her blog; I just don't dislike her as much.

Meh. Photos of her next to Sherry look like an optical illusion. She's like a giantess.

Here's what made me unsubscribe from Katie's blog.  This is from 9/11/2009.  Some comments were from people who were just like her.  Some called her out for being a dope.  I just unsubscribed and never visited her blog again until today.

I have a secret.

On the Tuesday morning of September 11th in 2001, I was studying in my college dorm for a quiz about a book I was supposed to be reading.  (that isn’t the secret)

A girl who lived on my hall ran in and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center.

“What’s the World Trade Center?” I asked.

I thought that maybe it was a mall.

Where trading took place.

An international mall of traders.  Sortof like Trader Joes…maybe.

I didn’t know.

I didn’t really know why people were crying either.  I mean I was watching the same television they were.  So why the heck were these girls bawling over a collapsed building?!?!  I know…I was just a ball of compassion.  So full of mercy.  and intelligence.  Somehow I totally missed the fact that people were still inside the Twin Towers.

There's more rambling, of course.
