Yup, I completly agree with you - I live in Houston and its amazing what you can get here for cheap. A 6k sq. ft. home is pretty large, but not crazy to me, since we typically have larger floor plans in the South. They seem to want 4-5 kids so, good for them, fill that house up! I think the home is beautiful (on the inside, the outside is kind of ugly). I love the mouldings, transoms, curved stairs, etc. I dunno, she doesn't bother me and I am kind of suprised to see people with such strong feelings about her.

I live in the south too – in a 1500 square foot floor plan.  To me a 3000 square foot house is big.  She lives in the equivalent of two 3000 square foot houses.  She's not terrible, her content is just kind of unexciting.  Maybe it's because I also read YHL and they moved around the same time and have had so much content about changes to their new house.

The annoying thing about her to me is the humblebrags, like the post about her closet where she talked about how she was not popular….so people would ooh and aah over her closet and tell her that they loved her, thought she was popular and were jealous of her closet.  I'm glad that she is open about their financial situation.  So many bloggers treat the topic of money as taboo and she's at least honest that all of their money is in the house.

Yeah, she doesn't usually bother me but the post about being a model was a humblebrag too, and apparently she removed it.

I don't really love her style, the photo-heavy posts are kind of annoying, and I prefer smaller homes, but she doesn't bug me all that much. I don't love her blog, but it doesn't drive me bonkers like Prebaby Blog or That Wife.

Well, me either; few people are as horrifying as That Wife.  Bower just reminds me so much of so many women I've known living in the South all my life; as I mentioned before, it's this really palpable fake sweetness and faux humility coupled with unexamined privilege and traditionalist attitudes toward gender roles and religion and the like.  Yeah, I'm probably projecting considering I haven't even visited the site all that much, but she was immediately recognizable to me as a type.*  She just stood out to me, too, because YHL mention her fairly often, so I went to her blog expecting something very different; yet YHL and Bower Power are basically polar opposites, IMO.

And there's also the fact that I don't think she's much of a designer, yet she's been touted as one.  Not a big deal; just a little irksome.

Basically, though, I guess the heart just hates what it hates.

*It occurs to me that this isn't even necessarily a Southern type; you can find such women in any region.  Maybe I just associate it with Southern women because that's where I'm from, and I'm super-seriously-unfairly projecting.

She annoyed me when Amy Winehouse died and she posted this joke about how her dead plants were like Amy Winehouse. This was literally the day after she died. When her commenters pointed out that this was maybe in poor taste, Katie pretended she didn't even know she died! She pulled this whole, "Aw, shucks, I'm just a Southern gal who lives out in the sticks and I don't know nuthin' about no celebrity gossip." This is a woman who has a blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Sure, you didn't know. I live in the freaking Middle East and I knew about it an hour later.

I know it was a relatively small thing, but it changed my perception of her and I don't read her regularly anymore.

Here's a good one: http://www.bowerpowerblog.com/2011/03/somebody-hand-me-the-box-of-kleenex/comment-page-1/#comments

The grief related to moving from your home is like the grief associated with losing a child. Wait. What? No.

And then in her comments are tinged with the aforementioned "I'm just a good ol' Southern gal on her period, so sorry" and completely refuses to acknowledge requests to change the post. I mean, not that she should, I suppose, if she wants the controversy. Why wouldn't she? It gets people talking and coming to or linking to her blog.

Yay for the nofollow attribute.

I've been reading for a long time, but she's turned into a semi-hate read for me recently.  Her Destin vacation post (part one!) had a billion pictures in it.  90% of the time, I've read (scanned) the entire post before all her dang pictures show up.

They plan on having a ton o' kids, so the big house made sense to me… until she posted the "House Poor" post and basically shared their finances.  If things are really like that – can they really afford enough kids to fill at 6000 sq ft house?  Part of me also thought it was just a deal of a lifetime and they would sell when the market recovered and make money back – but she talks about this house as though it's their forever home.

Has anyone watched any of the videos she's done with Sherry from YHL?  Like nails on a chalkboard:  http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/10/bowers-in-da-house/  Sherry and Katie both overdo it on the really immature jokes and puns, but Katie can go into just plain bad taste a lot.  So fat, so lazy or I'd find some to quote.

On not telling her husband they were pregnant first, they had been trying forever to have a second child (she posted about it a million times) so I kinda see it as that he knew it was coming at some point.  I didn't tell my husband first, but he was out of town for work so it's a totally different situation.

I can't decide what's worse, the fact that she ACTUALLY FUCKING MADE that comparison, or the idiots white knighting her in the comments after she got called out for it.

All of it. All of it makes me want to vomit. The Bower Power sheep are a big part of what makes me want her to GOMI.

Thanks, that must've been why I couldn't find it.  A monthly mortgage payment of almost $2300, that's just insane. EDIT: OH, I see, they got it down to $2k a month.  That still sounds like a LOT, and this from someone who rents in NYC.

It's ridiculous, especially when they're still having to put money toward the other house they still own, AND the current renters of the other house might not be able to get financing. That's just so irresponsible–especially when you have a small child, and even more so when you're trying for another baby. She supposedly breaks even on her blog endeavors, so that her annoying-ass sponsored posts and ads go almost solely to supporting the blog and buying material for projects to supply blog content.

I mean. That's just sad. I'm sure she's super awkward and sweet in real life, and I'm sure I'd want to squeeze her and put her in my pocket. Online, though…blurgh.

The thing is…I'm not a weird stalker; this info was extremely easy to find with quick googling. I got bored after about fifteen minutes of trying to find the house poor post, and I found out where she lived, her family's names, how much her husband makes, how much she paid for her house, and several personal details that make me uncomfortable.

She has a bunch of haters over on The Nest forum, too, btw. Amusing commentary over there, at times.

Holy shit, that Amy Winehouse thing is horrible.  There's no fucking way she didn't know Amy had died by the next day; as has been pointed out, we po' Southern folks have the same damn internet and TV and phones the rest of the country has.  And then I Googled the post, thinking it might be a tad ambiguous–but no, no it isn't.  She says one of her plants went from "Green and full of life…kinda like a Leonardo DiCaprio of shrubs" to "a different celebrity….I’ll give you two guesses…her drink of choice is eyeliner, tatoos and music and her name starts with AmyWinehouse.  Bless her little heart."

There's simply no other way to spin that–she's saying the plant is dead like Amy Winehouse.  I mean, she's clearly not saying the plant has eyeliner and a bouffant or sings like Amy; it was full of life, and now it's dead.  And she says that because she thinks it's a cute little joke.  It's so callous to me; even if she posted that today I'd think it was really, really distasteful.  (Also, Leonardo DiCaprio represents greenness and life to her? WTF?)

I think it's interesting that her little addendum about not knowing Amy had died includes this: "And my deepest condolences to her friends and family…I’m sure you knew a different Amy than the general public did."  Maybe I'm wrong–I guess it could be interpreted otherwise–but that strikes me as a dig: Sort of like, "She was a real mess, but I'm sure her family loved her."

Anyway, I read that post linked above where she compares moving out of her house to losing a child, and the worst part about that to me was . . . her use of ellipses.  Or just her general lack of writing ability.  She uses ellipses like all-purpose punctuation: They're semicolons!  They're dashes!  They're periods!  It's just a bunch of run-on sentences with random capitalization.  I've criticized YHL's over-use of "haha" and repetition on their blog, but they're certainly pros compared to Katie Bower.
