A little while back, we got up in arms about Naomi riding a bike with baby in tow, and Naomi sans helmet (personal decision vs. selfishness/vanity). Turns out it was for a magazine feature (momentum mag). It features her, tick tock vintage, calibean and delightfully tacky, and guess what? Not a single one wearing a helmet, or even a prop helmet in their twee bike baskets or slung on a handlebar. This makes me so ragey! I wear cute clothes while biking, but hello– my best accessory is a fucking helmet! It just sets a bad example. At least MENTION helmets!

That INFURIATES me. Especially Naomi with the baby in the back, but we've already discussed that.

Also, I don't read Delightfully Tacky, but holy hair batman!

That magazine seems to be chockablock full of people riding bikes without helmets, which is ironic because it encourages 'smart living by bike.'

This increases my appreciation for Esme and the Lane Way who always has her helmet on if she shoots pictures of herself biking and it's usually in the frame or mentioned in the post when she's just posing with her bike.

Yeah I flipped through the magazine and almost no one is wearing a helmet! Not in the ads or the stories. What the hell? That is so stupid!

From DC Area

Yeah so a guy on a rent a bike was plowed into by a huge truck the other day here in DC, not far from where I am sure Naomi lives.  He was then dragged by the truck for a block while onlookers had to flag down the driver to stop him from dragging the guy further.

No helmet, of course, but I can see where he wouldn't…it was a rent a bike, after all…

Naomi/little darling baby/hipster hubby…NO EXCUSES.

I really hope she saw that on the news and has turned a corner…this place is unsafe for bicyclists, even in the cute adorable neighborhood known as Capitol Hill (which wasn't so cute and adorable when I was growing up in the 80s, but eh, times change, and Naomi and everyone else wasn't here in the 80s to see lots of strung out folks and robberies, etc.).

Last I heard dude on rent a bike was going to be okay but was in pretty BAD shape.

Mancat runs a bike shop in town, and they rent bikes. They won't rent one without renting a helmet as well, or the person has to show they have a helmet. Now – whether they actually USE it can't be enforced.

I bike almost everywhere and I never go without a helmet. It's just stupid – I mean, yes, I might have the right of way, or I might not be at fault, but it I get hit by a car, it doesn't freaking matter. I'm still hit by a large vehicle that will likely be travelling a lot faster than I am.

What bugs me more is that Naomi's precious baby's helmet is never actually properly placed on the kid's head. I don't give a fuck about the Rockstar's brains (dumbest blog name ever, BTW, considering that rockstar and Mormon is a huge oxymoron), but don't just plop a helmet on your kid's head for show.

anybody read what's going on in the comment section of naomi's recent post? two people have pointed out that it's unwise for her to ride around without a helmet. surprise, surprise, some of her readers are absolute morons- "FIRST OF ALL, even if she were to fall, God forbid, how would a helmet ON HER HEAD protect her unborn fetus?" uh, by potentially saving their lives? unbelievable.

Urgh blurgh. And the thing is that, from the sound of the comment you quoted they assume that falling is totally unlikely. But it's not just about the possibility to falling: it's about the possibility of getting hit. My brother was recently hit by a car while cycling–it was completely the car's fault, and he was bruised but otherwise unharmed, and I just–even if you assume you're a really skilled cyclist, wearing a helmet is still a good idea. Even if it means you can't wear your hair in a topknot.

w/r/t the comments on Naomi's post about momentum…

I went to look myself (did a ctrl+f on helmet), and the one I assume that person is responding to does come off as pretty condescending:

Hi, Naomi. I was just curious as to why you don't seem to value both your life and the life of your unborn child enough to wear a helmet while riding your bicycle? Your body isn't really ONLY yours anymore, is it? As someone who seems to value her family and daughter, it seems like you're taking an unnecessary risk and endangering the little one still in your womb. Something to think about, I suppose.

Unrelated, but there's also this (bizarre) gem:

I am a husband, and I simply cannot understand the deal behind this woman?
A real admirable woman is a woman that either/or, goes to war and protects our freedom, makes a change (and no i am not talking about wearing silly fake glasses and sporting bold lipstick to prove something), shares her volunteering experiences and encourages others to give back, and/or above all, puts his/hers childs safety before anything. I do not see Naomi doing either. So why she is feautured in momentum, with no helmet, and no real skill, other than wearing lipstick and pretty dresses is beyond me.
Thanks Momentum, if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't of had discovered this "great blog"
Everybody, please go donate your time in something better.
And Naomi, don't feel too accomplished, because you haven't done much, past attempting to sell your life online.

PMSL at the idea of the "rockstars" forsaking hipsterdom and heading off to war.

Most bizarre snark ever!

The first time she posted the picture, there were helmet comments. She then later said she had ordered herself a new helmet. I don't know why she wouldn't mention that right out in the new post.

Calivintage posted a video collab she did with Public bikes. Of course, not wearing a helmet while riding through the streets of San Francisco/Oakland. I'm really sick of this idea that helmets are unattractive/unsightly and don't need to be photographed in use. The image is the message, regardless of whether or not you assume it's worn otherwise.
