Fuck The Clever Headline, Blakeley Arrested

Boyfriend Of The Year

Richard Blakeley, boyfriend of the year, was arrested for something.

busted

As mentioned earlier in a blind item, Blakeley was allegedly recently arrested for assaulting his long-time girlfriend. Case details on public record here.

Update:

dun dun dun

And another update:

From what I understand, a Class A Misdemeaner in New York carries a possible sentence of up to one year of jail time. On the flip side, they can impose less, including no jail time. It appears to be up to the judge presiding over the case.

10 days between the alleged incident and the arrest. Let’s play Gawker! Was he out of town, perhaps sailing the Greek archipelago aboard Denton’s yacht? Were his (alleged) victim’s fingers too injured to dial the phone? Did mommy and daddy suggest to daughter over the holiday weekend that young Richard deserved inches of unlubricated instruction at the Tombs? Or did he come back for more?

Brava, PP, for reporting a story no one else will touch.

  2. avatar Web20Morons says:

Great find PP. I think this effectively dampers the douchebaggery of the NY Web Media set.

  3. avatar DNL says:

You take this info (incident 8/25/09), line it up with the victim’s tweets, and puke:

    happy birthday @blakeley! :)

I saw that. Thanks for posting it. I’ve had people ask me the extent of her injuries, and I’m sure people are curious.

I am choosing not to include the victim’s picture, tweets, or facebook statuses any longer in the posts out of respect for her.

    • avatar Drive-by Commenter says:

I thought his iphone was broken, so what’s up with the tweets via twitterfon? Also, he sure was doing a lot of tweeting with only one hand. Smacks of window dressing to me.

  4. avatar juliaspublicist says:

Has anyone asked why Gawker hasn’t reported on this yet?

  5. avatar totaljing says:

What’s interesting is that she held the sailing birthday party for him AFTER the alleged assault. At least, they BOTH posted happy go lucky pictures after that date:

His iphone is broken the day after the alleged incident-I’ve seen a few guys use their cell phones as weapons (seriously, while I Was at bellevue…it’s a convenient thing to swing)…
Richard Blakeley My iPhone is broken so please don’t attempt calling or texting me, just shoot me an email if you need to get in touch.

Okay, read the tweets above from the alleged victim. Sailing party must have taken place the NIGHT BEFORE the alleged incident and the pictures were posted on the 30th to make no one suspicious.

    • avatar partypants says:

Their relationshit is as much about mutual self-promotion and getting publicity for their book at this point as it is about affection. I’m sure there was a lot of fake-plastered-on-grins going on.

    • avatar 11th wang says:

or she could have broken the phone. either way, the phone doesn’t matter. it’s not a person.

i have a friend who was using her boyfriend’s computer and discovered that he was cheating on her. suddenly he owned a smashed laptop. it happens.

  6. avatar partypants says:

I would email this to Jezebel but a) they’re a gawker affiliate and likely would ignore it, and b) they would report it as their own find and I’d once again get backdoor’d on a story. Fuck em. Let them find it themselves.

    • avatar juliajane says:

Gawker once took credit for a story you broke? That sucks! Maybe you could comment on Jezebel and provide a link to getoffmyinternets?

      • avatar partypants says:

I’m blocked from commenting on jezebel. I’ve never had gawker steal a story I personally broke, but I have heard of their habit of doing that from others.

      • avatar Anon says:

I think you underestimate Jezebel’s interest in undermining their big brother. They’ve sniped plenty at Blakely before. (Like when he got obsessed with Moe Tkacik after she pity-fucked him.)

Gawker has never taken credit for anything you wrote, but you’ve “heard” about it happening to “others”? Weak.

        • avatar totaljing says:

Why is it weak? PP’s life is all over the net. She doesn’t have anyone back her up and she’s doing this all on her own. To be somewhat cautious about an exceedingly sensitive story seems advisable.

And re: Gawker taking credit. Sheesh. That’s just common knowledge.

        • avatar AudiWriteOff says:

Sorry, but PP and RBNS did a lot of the reporting on the Randi Z. / Julia Allison Fan-gate episode. If I recall correctly, I don’t think Gawker gave them any credit.

          • avatar Trust me says:

Jacy broke that story on RBNS. And yes, Gawker picked it up and never gave a nod to RBNS.

          • avatar Jacy says:

I didn’t really but it’s nice of you to say. The commenters broke it and hectored me, rightfully, to post on it. The commenters truly write RBNS for the most part.

  7. avatar Jacy says:

    His face nauseates me.

  8. Until proven innocent, I guess?

No one is defending abuse against men or women, but my father was arrested for domestic violence when he was defending himself (blocking, holding back, etc..) his ex wife beat the hell out of him on several occasions and I’ll never understand why he put up with it. The point is that when the officers came out, they took him into custody and she was free to go home.

Woman are almost NEVER seen to be at fault in any domestic situation and the assumption of guilt is almost ALWAYS on the guy. It’s pretty ridiculous and I think the way you wrap up your post is a shining example of my statement.

I don’t know the guy as anything more than a writer for a blog and I don’t know the girl as anyone other than his ex, so there is no personal bias involved in this post.

    • avatar Trust me says:

Trust me on this one. The “details” of this incident are well known among the closest friends of both. While I feel horrible for people like your dad, and certainly know wrongly accused men, and guilty women (a higher # than ever gets reported, in this case….well, it really was as crappy as you could ever imagine.

  9. avatar iplaudius says:

Innocent until proven guilty, people. If he did hit her, then he deserves to be prosecuted, and he deserves the public shaming.

Unfortunately, this stinks of character assassination. In the comments threads here and on Gawker, “partypants” has gone as far as to say that he looks like a murderer and to question his sexuality.

    Truth will out.

    • avatar partypants says:

      James get a life.

Edit: Obviously that was sarcasm. Thought I’d point that out since everyone seems to be using their omg tragic operrrrraaaaa voices today.

      • avatar name says:

        is iplaudius james del????????

      • avatar iplaudius says:

Tragic opera voice, ha — “iplaudius” is always pathologically serious. I don’t know James, and I don’t hang with the Gawker people. I’m not even in the same time zone.

What I’m trying to say: if Blakeley’s innocent, you’re a piece of shit.

        • avatar Trust me says:

BWAHHHHH Don’t get your panties in a bundle.

          • avatar iplaudius says:

What gets my panties in a knot is that this James Del — while I’m sure he’s a nice guy — couldn’t possibly have written the shit I’ve posted.

What–haven’t you memorized every comment I’ve ever written? You didn’t find them compelling, enlightening, moving?

  10. avatar Rick Blakeley says:

I’ve known Blakeley for thirty years and I’ve never known him to hit a girl. I have four sons and the first rule they were taught was the same rule my father taught me “You never hit a girl no matter what.”
When you think about it, in this case, Blakeley has everything to lose and his ex has everything to gain!
So in conclusion, THINK before the hate speech, because YOU were not there!!

  11. avatar Records Custodian says:

Audi, I like your comments and all that, but how is pointing out his prior bad acts — which weren’t remotely violent in nature – different from, for example, pointing out all of the guys the alleged victim might have screwed, or all of her possibly slutty outfits?

There really isn’t much difference. I thought Blakeley was kind of a jackass for posting this back then, but I also think Moe is kind of a jackass, so it was a wash.

I just sort of cringe at the idea that this is somehow used as probative of his potential guilt in this situation and the obvious double standard.

Then again, I think it was pretty shitty to post this whole story. It is an arrest, not a conviction, he is hardly a public figure in any meaningful sense, and by all accounts, this is hardly a cut and dry case. It sounds messy and convoluted and pretty fact specific, and it is kind of unseemly to post something like this and pile on the innuendo.

    • avatar AudiWriteOff says:

These are his own words/actions, unfiltered. Also, as I have noted elsewhere, he is only charged (not convicted) of assault (not battery). So, I am done with this topic for now. The main reason I am upset about this is the Gawker double-standard. This guy has a Wikipedia page, he is “noteable”, and he is a public figure. More so than many of Gawker’s targets. This should have been reported on day one instead of covered-up. Most Gawker targets get smeared a lot worse and without any facts. At least GOMI waited for some facts before reporting.
